5 Easy, Low Impact Physical Therapy Exercises For The Elderly

Here are some exercises for common problem areas that you can do at home to help ease some of the discomfort you might be feeling. These exercises are designed to be low impact while giving you the benefits of many physiotherapy movements. 1. Weight Transfers

  • Start by standing behind a sturdy chair for balance
  • Spread your legs to slightly wider than shoulder width apart
  • Shift to your right side, keeping your feet planted & slightly bending your right knee
  • Slowly shift back to center & continue shifting to your left side
  • Repeat for 30 seconds

2. Pelvic Tilts

  • Sit straight in a chair
  • Make sure your upper body is in line, or stacked, with your hips
  • Roll your pelvis forward with a brief hold
  • Return to the start position & roll your pelvis back
  • Continue for 30 seconds

3. Arm Arcs

  • Sit or stand with your arms at your side
  • Keeping your arms straight, bring them up & over your head
  • Slowly bring your arms back down
  • Repeat for 30 seconds

4. Shoulder Circles

  • Sit or stand with arms at your side
  • Rotate your shoulders forward in full circles, if possible, for 30 seconds
  • Stop & change rotation direction, continue for 30 more seconds

5. Arm Circle Holds

  • Sit or stand & hold your arms up to your side
  • Start making small circles with your arms for 10 seconds
  • Stop, but don’t put your arms down, hold them up for 5 seconds
  • Make small circles in the opposite direction for 10 seconds
  • Stop & hold for another 5 seconds
